Integrated Water Project Launched for the Burgas Region


Minister of Environment and Water Emil Dimitrov and Eng. Gancho Tenev, Executive Director of “Water Supply and Sewerage ” EAD—Burgas, today signed a contract for the implementation of the integrated water project for the Burgas region. This large-scale project is funded by the Operational Program “Environment” (OPOS). The total investment amounts to 459.3 million leva, with OP Environment providing a grant of 323.7 million leva.
The project involves the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the existing water supply and sewerage infrastructure, as well as the construction of new systems and facilities in thirteen urban areas—Burgas, Nesebar, Pomorie, Sozopol, Primorsko, Obzor, Aytos, Karnobat, Tsarevo, Kiten, Chernomorets, Sarafovo, and Lozenets.
Upon its successful completion, 324,566 population equivalents will have access to improved wastewater collection and treatment, while 279,011 residents will benefit from improved water supply services.
Project activities include the reconstruction of over 158 km of water mains and 22 km of sewer networks, as well as the construction of over 80 km of new water and sewer networks. Plans call for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Karnobat and the reconstruction of the Burgas, Meden Rudnik, and Obzor WWTPs. Two drinking water treatment plants will be reconstructed: the Kamchia Drinking Water Treatment Plant and the Yasna Polyana Drinking Water Treatment Plant.
The project scope includes upgrading the SCADA system and establishing a GIS system for the designated territory of “VIK” EAD in Burgas. The systems will be part of a smart metering infrastructure for monitoring water consumption with the aim of optimizing network operations and efficiency in real time.
The project implementation period is 43 months.
The signing ceremony was attended by the regional governor and chairman of the Water Supply and Sewerage Association, Valcho Cholakov; Member of Parliament and chair of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment and Water, Ivelina Vasileva; Dimitar Nikolov, mayor of Burgas Municipality; mayors of municipalities in Burgas Province; Atanaska Nikolova, Deputy Minister of Environment and Water; members of parliament; and heads of government agencies.
