Vetren Wastewater Treatment Plant – Vetren Urban Area

In 2012, the Municipality of Burgas is implementing a project for the following facility: “Integrated Project for the Improvement and Development of Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure in the neighborhoods of Vetren, Banevo, and Mineralni Bani, Burgas,” with a sub-project titled: “Vetren Wastewater Treatment Plant, Burgas.” The project is being implemented with financial support from the “Environment 2007–2013” Operational Program, co-financed by the European Union through the Cohesion Fund. The total project budget amounts to 29,371,745 BGN, of which 19,020,777 BGN is grant funding, with additional funding from the National Fund of 4,033,347 BGN and own funds of 6,317,621 BGN. The plant was commissioned in 2016.
The wastewater treatment plant has been transferred to “Water Supply and Sewerage” EAD, Burgas, for management, maintenance, and operation.
The “Vetren” WWTP treats wastewater from the Vetren, Mineralni Bani, Banevo, Rudnik, and Chernomore neighborhoods. The plant’s design capacity is 16,784 PE and a hydraulic load of 2,571 m³/d, or an annual water volume of 938,415 m³/y.

The main treatment process takes place in the following facilities:
• primary treatment—an inlet chamber equipped with a coarse screen, mechanical screens, biological phosphorus removal, and a sand and grease trap;
• biological treatment—an activated sludge basin (ASB) with an aeration station;
• reagent dosing station;
• sludge dewatering station;
• UV disinfection.

The treated wastewater is discharged from the WWTP into the Kurbardere River, from its source to its confluence with Atanasovsko Lake.
