Kiten Wastewater Treatment Plant – Primorsko-Kiten Urban Area

In 2018, the Municipality of Primorsko is implementing a project titled “Engineering for the Expansion and Modernization of the Wastewater Treatment Plant for the Primorsko–Kiten Agglomeration.” The project is being implemented with financial support from the “Environment” Operational Program 2014–2020, co-financed by the European Cohesion Fund. The total project budget amounts to 22,272,737 BGN, of which over 16 million BGN is grant funding, with additional funding provided by the Municipality of Primorsko and the state budget. The wastewater treatment plant has been handed over for operation to “Water Supply and Sewerage” EAD, Burgas.
The “Kiten” WWTP serves the towns of Kiten and Primorsko and has a design capacity of 55,000 PE. The plant has a hydraulic capacity of 13,910 m³/d and an annual water flow of 5,007,296 m³/y.

The main treatment process takes place in the following facilities:
• primary treatment—fine screens, aerated grit chamber, primary clarifier;
• biological treatment – a biological reactor with simultaneous denitrification;
• secondary sedimentation – radial clarifiers (3 units);
• disinfection using a UV system;
• aerobic stabilization;
• sludge thickener, mechanical dewatering with centrifuges;
• chemical treatment plant for chemical dephosphatization with FeCl₃;
• discharge collector – partially replaced;
• auxiliary facilities – chemical storage facility, air blowing station, pumping station for recirculating and excess sludge, inlet and outlet pumping stations.

The treated water is collected in an underground collector and discharged into the Karaagach River.
